Short description
The World According to Garp follows T.S. Garp, the son of a nurse who conceived him on her own terms with a comatose soldier. Raised by his strong-willed mother, Jenny Fields, Garp grows up wanting to be both a writer and a wrestler. His life becomes entangled with her when she publishes a bestselling book about women and sex that turns her into a leading figure of the feminist movement, overshadowing his own literary ambitions. His marriage to Helen and his role as a father bring further complications as he tries to find his own place in the world.
George Roy Hill directed the film, the eighth of the nine features listed in his filmography, following A Little Romance and released between that film and Funny Farm. Steve Tesich wrote the screenplay, and Hill produced with Robert Crawford Jr. Robin Williams stars as Garp, with Mary Beth Hurt as Helen, Glenn Close as Jenny Fields, John Lithgow as Roberta Muldoon, and Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy as Mr. and Mrs. Fields.
Made on a budget of 17 million dollars, the film took in about 30 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.7 out of 10 from 399 votes, while the critics' score stands at 6.2 out of 10 from 21 reviews, placing the two measures fairly close together. The film runs 136 minutes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Robin Williams, who played Harp, was originally considered for the role of Roberta, which went to John Lithgow, while Jeff Daniels was the main contender for the role of Harp.
- The mother of screenwriter John Irving was unmarried when he was conceived. He never met his father, and his mother never spoke of him. One day he told her that either she would tell him about his father, or he would invent one himself, along with the circumstances of his conception, to which she replied: “Well, go ahead.” And that's how the script for "Harp's World" was written.
- The house that the plane crashes into was built at the end of the single runway of a tiny airport in Lincoln Park, New Jersey (approximately 56 kilometers from New York). The debris of the destroyed house was not cleared from there for several weeks.
