High Society

High Society is a musical romantic comedy about Tracy Lord, a wealthy young woman preparing to marry a respectable businessman. Her plans are complicated by the arrival of her ex-husband, C. K. Dexter-Haven, who lives nearby and still has feelings for her. A tabloid reporter and photographer come to cover the wedding, and their presence, along with Dexter's efforts, unsettles the household in the days before the ceremony. The film is based on the play The Philadelphia Story and is a musical remake of the 1940 romantic comedy of the same name, with songs by Cole Porter woven into the story.

Charles Walters directed the film, his fifth feature after Ziegfeld Follies, Easter Parade, Summer Stock and Lili. John Patrick wrote the screenplay, and Sol C. Siegel produced. Bing Crosby plays Dexter, Grace Kelly plays Tracy, and Frank Sinatra appears as reporter Mike Connor, with Celeste Holm, John Lund and Louis Calhern in supporting roles. Louis Armstrong appears as himself. The credited cast numbers 47.

Released in July 1956, the film had a budget of 3 million dollars and took 8 million dollars worldwide, a solid return. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from around 19,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.8 out of 10 from 274 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 23 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
