The Emerald Forest

The Emerald Forest centres on Bill Markham, an American engineer overseeing the construction of a dam in the Brazilian rainforest. When his young son Tommy vanishes into the jungle, Bill spends the next ten years searching for him. He eventually discovers the boy living with an isolated indigenous tribe that took him in and raised him as one of their own. Tommy, now a grown man, knows the forest intimately and has little desire to leave it, which forces his father to reconsider what civilization and rescue actually mean.

John Boorman directed and produced the film, working from a screenplay by Rospo Pallenberg. It followed Excalibur in Boorman's filmography and came two years before Hope and Glory. Powers Boothe plays Bill, with Charley Boorman as the adult Tomme, Meg Foster as Jean Markham, Estee Chandler as Heather, Dira Paes as Kachiri and Eduardo Conde as Uwe Werner, among a credited cast of 25.

Released in June 1985 by Embassy Pictures and Christel Films, the film runs 114 minutes and belongs to the action, adventure and drama genres. It took about 24 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.9 from roughly 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 from 282 votes. A critics' rating of 7.2 from 19 reviews places critical opinion somewhat above the audience scores on both sites.
