The Misfits

A woman named Roslyn Taber arrives in Reno, Nevada, to divorce her husband. In the course of that stay she meets Gay Langland, an older cowboy who now earns what he can from gambling, and Guido, a former pilot, and the two men are drawn to her. She also befriends Isabelle Steers, a woman of long experience with divorces. Roslyn ends up living with the men at Guido's unfinished house in the desert outside town. When Perce Howland, a rodeo rider, joins them, the group turns to catching wild mustangs in the mountains, a hard and dangerous way to make a living that puts pressure on the feelings growing among them.

John Huston directed the film, the tenth of the twenty-two features he directed in chronological order, following The Unforgiven and preceding The Night of the Iguana. Arthur Miller wrote the screenplay, and Huston produced with Frank E. Taylor. Clark Gable plays Gay, Marilyn Monroe plays Roslyn, Montgomery Clift plays Perce, Thelma Ritter plays Isabelle, and Eli Wallach plays Guido, among a credited cast of twenty and a credited crew of forty-six.

Released in February 1961, the film cost about four million dollars and took roughly eight million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from around 25,000 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from far fewer, about 451. A critics' rating of 7.9 out of 10 from thirty-two reviews sits above both audience scores.
