Short description

Matt and Jay are close friends from Toronto who dream of performing at the Rivoli club. Despite having no songs written, they attempt an unusual plan to secure a booking using a motorhome inspired by a DeLorean. The scheme fails, and the two men are accidentally transported back to the year 2008. Once in the past, they must navigate a familiar yet strange environment, interacting with younger versions of themselves while searching for a way to return to their own time.

The film was directed by Matt Johnson, following his previous work on The Dirties in 2013 and BlackBerry in 2023. It was written by Johnson and Jay McCarrol, who both star as the lead characters, Matt and Jay. The supporting cast includes Ben Petrie, Ethan Eng, Michael Scott, and Jared Raab. Produced in Canada by companies including Elevation Pictures and Téléfilm Canada, the project had a budget of 1 million USD and earned 5 million USD at the worldwide box office. On TMDB, the movie holds a rating of 7.7/10 based on 129 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • As with the web series and the television series, a significant portion of the conversations and snippets of interaction with listeners were found in a vast amount of raw footage (including unused clips from the web series).
  • The passerby who mentions Jay by name was not a 'plant.' He was a genuine passerby. It took director, screenwriter, and actor Matt Johnson at least half an hour of talking with him before the passerby finally uttered Jay's name.
  • The torn pants worn by Matt actually belonged to Matt Johnson. He hasn't parted with them since 2010, considering them a sort of lucky charm. In all that time, Matt has never washed them. In many scenes, Matt is shown in identical pants, torn in the same places as the originals. These were provided to Matt by the costume designer.
  • To ensure the film could be screened, Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol intentionally avoided mentioning events from the web series and the television series.
  • The plotline involving Jay shooting his bandmates was conceived after the shooting of the security guard, once the television crews arrived at the scene.
  • All scenes featuring the present-day Matt and Jay in the 2008 apartment were filmed on a set rather than on location. Other tenants were already living in the apartment, and they flatly refused to let the filmmakers in, declining even an ever-increasing monetary compensation for the inconvenience. At some point, the filmmakers realized it would be simpler and cheaper to construct a set of the apartment in a studio.
  • The scene with Matt and the wires on top of the skyscraper was filmed in a studio using a green screen, and it also included footage captured by a flying drone.
