Sing Sing

Sing Sing is a drama set inside the Sing Sing Correctional Facility, where John Whitfield, known as Divine G, is serving time for a crime he did not commit. He has found a purpose within a theatre workshop run by incarcerated men, writing and performing alongside them under the guidance of director Brent Buell. The group's balance shifts with the arrival of Clarence Maclin, called Divine Eye, a volatile newcomer with his own ideas about what the troupe should stage. The film follows the men as they work together on an original production, drawn from the real theatre programme at the prison.

Greg Kwedar directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Clint Bentley; the two had previously collaborated on Transpecos in 2016, making this his second feature as director. Colman Domingo leads the cast as Whitfield, with Clarence Maclin playing a version of himself alongside Paul Raci, Sean San Jose, and several other men who appear as themselves.

Made for about two million dollars, the film returned roughly three million worldwide, a modest theatrical result for a release of this scale. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.6 from around 29,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.4 from roughly 400 votes, while a critics' rating of 8.6 from 215 reviews places it clearly above those audience scores.
