Short description
Claire Kubik is a successful defense attorney living in Marin County with her husband, Tom, who runs a small contracting business. Their comfortable life unravels after a break-in at their home draws the attention of federal agents, who arrest Tom and reveal that he has been living under an assumed identity. Under his real name, Ronald Chapman, he served in a secret military unit and is wanted for the killing of civilians during an operation in El Salvador years earlier. Confident that he is being used as a scapegoat, Claire sets out to defend him before a military court, an unfamiliar system she cannot navigate alone. She enlists Charlie Grimes, a former military lawyer with a drinking problem and his own methods, while an official military defense attorney is also assigned to the case. As she digs into the past, the inquiry points toward a cover-up at higher levels, but it also puts her faith in her husband under strain.
Carl Franklin directed the film, the fifth in the directing career that runs from One False Move in 1992 through Devil in a Blue Dress, One True Thing and Out of Time in 2003, from a screenplay by Yuri Zeltser and Grace Cary Bickley. Ashley Judd plays Claire, Morgan Freeman plays Charlie Grimes, and Jim Caviezel plays Tom; Adam Scott, Amanda Peet and Bruce Davison appear in supporting roles.
Produced by Arnon Milchan, Janet Yang and Jesse Beaton, the film cost about 42 million dollars and took in roughly 64 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from around 51,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 from over 900. A critics' rating of 5.2 from 132 reviews sits below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- In early script versions, the character played by Ashley Judd was not a woman, but a man – a professor of law at Harvard.
- According to the film's director, Carl Franklin, during post-production he wanted to reshoot a panorama of the Golden Gate Bridge, but his plans were thwarted by the September 11, 2001 attacks.
- Jim Caviezel categorically refused to perform an explicit scene with Ashley Judd, stating that he loved and respected his wife too much, and that filming such a scene would contradict his convictions as a devout Catholic. Ultimately, Caviezel and Judd were shown fully clothed in the scene in question.
