Through a Glass Darkly

Karin has just left a psychiatric hospital and goes with her husband Martin, a doctor, to her family's cottage on a small island for the summer. Her father David, a writer, joins them, along with her younger brother Minus. Karin's husband cares for her but struggles with her emotional distance, while her brother is unsettled by her vulnerability and his own growing sexuality. David remains remote and preoccupied. Karin suffers hallucinations and violent attacks, and becomes convinced that God is visiting her, a conviction that pushes her further into illness and forces the family to confront difficult truths about themselves.

Ingmar Bergman directed and wrote the film, the eleventh of the twenty-four features he directed, following The Devil's Eye and preceding Winter Light. It was produced by Allan Ekelund for SF Studios and runs 91 minutes. Harriet Andersson plays Karin, Gunnar Björnstrand plays David, Max von Sydow plays Martin and Lars Passgård plays Minus.
