Stroszek

Bruno Stroszek leaves a Berlin prison with a warning to stay away from alcohol and little else to build on. He scrapes by as a street musician, playing a glockenspiel and an accordion, and strikes up a friendship with Eva, a prostitute trying to escape her situation. After trouble with her pimp, the two join Scheitz, Bruno's elderly and eccentric neighbor, who has decided to emigrate to Wisconsin. The trio hopes to find a better life in America.

Werner Herzog directed and wrote the film, the fifth of the twenty-two features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser and Nosferatu the Vampyre. Bruno S., who had starred in the earlier film, plays Bruno, with Eva Mattes as Eva and Clemens Scheitz as Scheitz. Herzog produced with Willi Segler for his own production company and ZDF.

The film was released in May 1977 and runs 108 minutes. On IMDb and TMDB, audience scores sit at 7.3 from 313 votes, while a critics' rating of 8.2 from 23 reviews places professional response noticeably higher than the general viewer consensus, an unusually wide gap for a drama of this scale.
