Golden Kamuy

Golden Kamuy is set in the wilds of Hokkaido, where Saichi Sugimoto, a veteran of the Russo-Japanese war, and Asirpa, a young Ainu girl, set out to locate a treasure whose location has been tattooed onto the bodies of a group of criminals. Racing them are assorted outcasts and renegade soldiers who want the same prize, turning the search into a contest across harsh frontier terrain.

The film is directed by Shigeaki Kubo, his second feature after High & Low The Worst (2019) and before ENJU (2027), from a screenplay by Tsutomu Kuroiwa. Kento Yamazaki plays Sugimoto and Anna Yamada plays Asirpa, with Gordon Maeda, Asuka Kudo, Shuntaro Yanagi and Yuki Izumisawa among the supporting cast; twenty-four performers are credited in all. It adapts the manga by Satoru Noda and was produced by TOHO, Shueisha, East Japan Marketing & Communications and AMUSE. It blends action and adventure with comedy and runs 129 minutes.

Released in Japan in January 2024, the film took in roughly 19 million dollars worldwide. Audiences are divided in their response: on IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from about 2,900 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.1 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 103 votes.
