The Fortunate Ones

Set in the Algarve region of Portugal during the 1990s, this drama follows Milene, a young woman with a mild intellectual disability. After the death of her grandmother, she finds herself caught between two very different worlds: her own wealthy, influential family and the Mata family, immigrants from Cape Verde who provide her with emotional support. As Milene develops a romantic connection with Antonino Mata, her relatives attempt to exert control over her life, creating a conflict rooted in the social divisions of the era.

The film was written and directed by Jeanne Waltz and is based on a novel by Lídia Jorge. The production was a collaboration between Portugal and Switzerland, involving Box Productions and C.R.I.M. Produções. The cast is led by Rita Cabaço in the role of Milene and Milton Lopes as Antonino, supported by Maria Fortes, Isabel Cardoso, Beatriz Batarda, and Carla Maciel.
