Set in Manawan, Quebec, Atikamekw Suns examines the aftermath of a 1977 tragedy where a vehicle plunged into a river. While two Quebecers survived the incident, five members of the Atikamekw community died. The film explores the tension between the official police conclusion that the event was an accident and the beliefs of the victims' families, who suspect racial hatred or negligence. Blending fictional elements with documentary styles, the narrative draws on the memories and dreams of the relatives to address themes of grief and injustice.
The film was directed, written, and produced by Chloé Leriche. The cast features Wikwasa Newashish, Mirociw Chilton, Jacques Newashish, Oshim Ottawa, Carl-David Ottawa, and Olivier Aubin. This Canadian drama was produced by Téléfilm Canada, SODEC, and Les Films de L'Autre. It has a runtime of 103 minutes and was released on April 5, 2024.
