Nick Hume is a successful risk analyst with a comfortable life, a loving wife and two teenage sons. One night, on the way home from an ice hockey game, he stops at an isolated gas station and his elder son is killed in front of him during what appears to be a gang initiation rather than a personal attack. Grief turns to fury as Nick watches the legal process fail to deliver what he considers justice, and he decides to take matters into his own hands. His pursuit of revenge sets off a wider cycle of violence, drawing in the leader of the gang responsible and pulling him away from the life he is trying to protect.
James Wan directed the film, which followed the two Saw films of 2003 and 2004 in his chronological filmography; Dead Silence also appeared in the same year. The screenplay is credited to Ian Jeffers, and Kevin Bacon leads the cast as Nick Hume, with Garrett Hedlund as Billy Darley, Kelly Preston as Helen Hume, Jordan Garrett as Lucas Hume, John Goodman as Bones Darley and Aisha Tyler as Detective Wallis. Twenty-six cast members and 170 crew members are credited.
Made on a budget of about 20 million US dollars, the film took roughly 17 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.7 from around 78,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 from over 1,300 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 4.4 from 113 reviews, lower than the audience scores on both sites. It runs 105 minutes and is an American production in the action, crime, drama and thriller genres.
