Short description
Trouble has come to Bikini Bottom, the underwater town where SpongeBob SquarePants lives and works at the Krusty Krab. King Neptune's crown has been stolen, and suspicion falls on SpongeBob's boss, Mr. Krabs. Although SpongeBob has just been denied the promotion he wanted, he refuses to turn against him. Together with his best friend Patrick, he sets out beyond the town's borders toward Shell City, hoping to recover the crown, clear Mr. Krabs and return in time to save him.
The film is the first feature-length outing built on the animated television series, directed by Mark Osborne and series creator Stephen Hillenburg from a screenplay by Kent Osborne, Tim Hill and Hillenburg. In Osborne's filmography it precedes Kung Fu Panda and The Little Prince. The voice cast returns Tom Kenny as SpongeBob, Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick, Rodger Bumpass as Squidward, Mr. Lawrence as Plankton and Jill Talley as Karen, among 48 credited cast members and 62 credited crew.
Made for about 30 million dollars, the film took roughly 140 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from 112,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.1 out of 10 from 3,306 votes. A film critics' rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 124 reviews sits below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- SpongeBob has worked at the Krusty Krab for at least 31 years. He is considered a child, as sponges can live up to five hundred years.
- The cartoon is dedicated to the memory of Jules Engel (1909-2003).
- Originally, it was intended that the film by Stephen Hillenburg (1961-2018) and Mark Osborne would conclude the eponymous series (1999-), but due to the film's success, the series was renewed for a fourth season. New episodes were filmed, set before the events of the film.
- To avoid straining the actor himself, a three-meter statue of David Hasselhoff was constructed for filming.
- At the 70th minute, when SpongeBob and Patrick are racing into Bikini Bottom, a monument resembling the Roman Colosseum can be seen in the upper right corner of the frame.
- David Hasselhoff's role was written before the actor was even approached with an offer to participate in the project. He immediately agreed, without even reading the script – primarily at the request of his daughters.
- Scarlett Johansson agreed to the role in this project because she is a big fan of cartoons, particularly "Ren & Stimpy."
