The Shadow

Set in 1890s Estonia within the Russian Empire, the film follows Juhan Liiv, a struggling poet who acts as an unconventional detective. While dealing with his own mental instability and perceptions of madness, Liiv investigates gruesome murders. His search for the truth leads him across a diverse social landscape, from the impoverished homes of peasants and the opulent estates of German nobility to ancient forests where witchcraft is practiced.

Directed by Jaak Kilmi, this production is the second of three listed films in his career, following The Dissidents and preceding Dirt in Your Face. The screenplay was written by Indrek Hargla.
