Short description
A young writer named Ariel travels to a secluded estate owned by Alfred Moretti, a pop star who vanished from the public eye thirty years ago. Invited to cover his new album, Ariel finds herself among a group of journalists and devoted followers. She soon discovers that she has become a part of the musician's complex and dangerous plan.
Written and directed by Mark Anthony Green, this American horror thriller stars Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich, with supporting roles played by Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, Melissa Chambers, and Tony Hale. The production was a collaboration between A24, MACRO, and Makeready.
The film had a budget of 10 million USD but earned 2 million USD at the worldwide box office. Its reception was mixed among audiences and professionals. On IMDb, the movie holds a 5.7 rating based on 13,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 5.6 rating from 247 votes. Film critics gave the project a rating of 5/10 across 137 reviews, which aligns closely with the general audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- During a conversation at the end of the film, the character played by John Malkovich tells Ayo Edebiri's character that members of the sect are everywhere and are spreading their teachings. Then, members of the sect that Ariel is personally familiar with are shown, such as Rachel and Belle (played by Tamera Tomakili and Amber Midfander, respectively). However, there is one person on the estate who is not a member of the sect. This is the admirer whose car Ariel drives away in, and this nuance suggests that every aspect of her 'escape' was orchestrated by Moretti himself.
- Ariel, played by Ayo Edebiri, learned a three-finger throat strike, which she used against one of Moretti’s admirers to take his car and escape, from a blind martial arts master she had once written an article about (which she mentioned at the beginning of the film over breakfast with Kent, played by Yang Mazin).
- In one scene, Alfred Moretti (played by John Malkovich) is served a dish with a blue lobster. In reality, a blue coloration occurs in only one lobster in two million individuals. When such a lobster is caught in a net, fishermen always throw it back into the water.
- When a YouTube video of Moretti’s return is shown on screen, the video is displayed, but the time counter remains fixed at the same point – 0 minutes 43 seconds.
