Peter Pan
Short description
Peter Pan is a silent film adaptation of J. M. Barrie's story about a boy who refuses to grow up. Peter enters the nursery of the Darling children in London, where he has lost his shadow, and meets Wendy and her brothers John and Michael. With the help of fairy dust, he takes them away to Never Never Land, a place of mermaids, Native inhabitants and the Lost Boys. There they encounter the pirate Captain Hook and his crew, and the children's adventures eventually leave them longing for home. The film was directed by Herbert Brenon, who also produced it, from a screenplay by Willis Goldbeck. It was the second of the three features in Brenon's directing career listed here, following his 1913 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and preceding Honours Easy, made more than a decade later. Betty Bronson plays Peter, with Ernest Torrence as Captain Hook, Mary Brian as Wendy, Virginia Brown Faire as Tinker Bell, Anna May Wong as Tiger Lily and Jack Murphy as John. Twenty performers are credited in all, and the production ran 101 minutes. On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 7.1 from about 1,500 votes, while on TMDB it scores 6.9 from a much smaller pool of 49 votes. The film was released by Paramount through Famous Players-Lasky in December 1924.

- James Barrie himself was personally involved in the casting. The role of Peter Pan was entrusted to actress Betty Bronson, and from that moment on, a tradition began for a long time of the role of Peter being played by a young actress. Barrie also planned to make a film with special effects and flights, but such filming proved too expensive for that time, so there are very few flights of the characters in the film.
- In 2000, the film was included in the National Film Registry.
- Since film archives did not yet exist in the United States at that time, film companies stored most films only as long as their distribution brought profit, so almost all copies of the film had been destroyed by 1929. However, in 1995, a single film of satisfactory quality was still found and restoration began. James Card, who worked at George Eastman House, discovered the film, David Piers at The Walt Disney Company carried out the restoration, and Philip Carli composed new music for the film. The restored version of the film was presented to the audience at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood in 2001.
