Siegfried, son of King Siegmund of Xanten, has completed his training as a blacksmith and forged a remarkable sword. Rather than return home, he sets out for Worms, the capital of the Burgundian kingdom, determined to win the hand of Kriemhild, the sister of King Gunther. His journey is marked by encounters with the dwarf Alberich, guardian of the Nibelung treasure, and with a dragon. Based on the medieval German epic poem the Nibelungenlied, this silent film is the first part of Fritz Lang's two-part adaptation of the material.
The film was directed by Fritz Lang, the third of the twenty-four features he directed in chronological order, following Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler and preceding Metropolis. The screenplay was written by Thea von Harbou and Lang, and Erich Pommer produced for UFA and Decla-Bioscop. Paul Richter plays Siegfried, with Margarete Schön as Kriemhild, Hanna Ralph as Brunhild and Theodor Loos as King Gunther. Twenty performers are credited.
Released in February 1924 and running 148 minutes, the film is an adventure, drama and fantasy production from Germany. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.7 out of 10 from 166 votes, indicating a generally favourable response from users of that platform.
