Alone in the Dark follows Edward Carnby, a private investigator who specialises in unexplained supernatural phenomena. His work has taken him into the occult remains of ancient civilisations, and his past holds an experience he cannot account for. When a friend dies under unclear circumstances, Carnby's search for answers draws him into a mystery that reaches far beyond a single death and into a threat to the wider world. His investigation brings him to a remote island, where he is joined by Aline Cedrac, an anthropologist. Together they face hostile forces connected to a conspiracy with demonic dimensions.
The film was directed by Uwe Boll and written by Michael Roesch, Peter Scheerer and Elan Mastai, with Shawn Williamson producing. It is the third of twenty films Boll has directed in chronological order, following House of the Dead in 2003 and preceding BloodRayne in 2006. Christian Slater plays Carnby, with Tara Reid as Aline Cedrac; Stephen Dorff, Will Sanderson, Ona Grauer and Ho-Sung Pak also appear. It is a German, Canadian and American co-production based on the video game series of the same name.
Alone in the Dark was released in January 2005 and runs 98 minutes. Against a budget of about 20 million US dollars, it took roughly 13 million worldwide, leaving it well short of its cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 3.4 out of 10 from 694 votes.
