Short description

A group of young people in a remote forest takes a locket from the wreckage of a collapsed fire tower. The locket was buried with the rotting body of Johnny, and removing it brings him back. What follows is his search for the stolen object and his pursuit of everyone who crosses his path.

In a Violent Nature is a Canadian-American horror film written and directed by Chris Nash, produced by Shannon Hanmer and Peter Kuplowsky, and released in 2024. It runs 94 minutes. Ry Barrett plays Johnny, with Andrea Pavlovic, Cameron Love, Reece Presley, Liam Leone and Charlotte Creaghan among the cast. For Nash, who also wrote the screenplay, it follows his earlier directing work and places him within a recent wave of independent horror.

The film received a critics' rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 28 reviews, while audiences on TMDB rate it 5.5 out of 10 from 592 votes, so opinion divides between professional reviewers and viewers. Its worldwide box office of about 4 million dollars is modest beside studio releases but solid for an independent genre film.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Ryan Barrett, who played the role of Johnny, later recounted that the monster mask was conceived by director and screenwriter Chris Nash. Several versions of the mask were created with different facial expressions. A problem arose with the glasses and mask fogging up, which quickly obscured visibility; therefore, a mask with an open face was used for scenes filmed from behind. However, if the actor turned his head quickly, the tip of his nose would peek out; to prevent this from appearing in the frame, the cinematographer had to anticipate the actor's turn based on the movement of his shoulders.
  • Nearly 57 liters of fake blood were used during filming, with varying consistencies depending on the requirements of the plot.
  • According to producer Peter Kuplovsky, the film was conceived as a continuation of a fictional series of slasher movies, so the possibility of releasing a sequel was built in from the start.
