- To play Doc Holliday, who was suffering from tuberculosis, Dennis Quaid had to lose 30 pounds.
- The film was shot almost simultaneously with George P. Cosmatos' "Tombstone" (1993), in which Kurt Russell played Earp and Val Kilmer played Doc. Unlike Cosmatos, who preferred a heap of tales about the legendary sheriff, the version by Kazdan and Costner is intentionally historical, detailed, and respectful of the real characters. This, among other things, led to their failure at the box office.
- Due to filming on this project, Michael Madsen was unable to join the set of "Pulp Fiction" (1994) to play Vincent Vega.
- The film was originally conceived as a six-hour miniseries.
- A 212-minute version of the film was released on DVD.

According to Madsen, he would have had time to work on both, but the producers hesitated and did not give him time to rehearse the role of Vega. In the end, John Travolta played the character for Tarantino.
