Wyatt Earp
Short description
Wyatt Earp is a Western that follows its title character from his upbringing under a strict, law-abiding father through the years he spends drifting across the frontier. After the death of his wife, he takes work as a buffalo hunter before eventually settling into a career in law enforcement. As a sheriff in Kansas towns, he is joined by his brothers and by the gambler and gunman Doc Holliday. Together they find themselves in conflict with the Clanton and McLaury gangs, a feud that comes to a head in Tombstone, Arizona.
Lawrence Kasdan directed and co-wrote the film with Dan Gordon, and it was produced by Kevin Costner, Kasdan and Jim Wilson. It was Kasdan's seventh film as director, arriving between Grand Canyon and French Kiss, and it followed his earlier Western Silverado. Costner plays Wyatt Earp, with Dennis Quaid as Doc Holliday, Gene Hackman as Nicholas Earp, and Linden Ashby, David Andrews and Jeff Fahey among the large credited cast.
The production had a budget of 63 million dollars and returned about 25 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.7 from roughly 59,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 from around 974 votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 from 86 reviews is lower than both audience scores.

- To play Doc Holliday, who was suffering from tuberculosis, Dennis Quaid had to lose 30 pounds.
- The film was shot almost simultaneously with George P. Cosmatos' "Tombstone" (1993), in which Kurt Russell played Earp and Val Kilmer played Doc. Unlike Cosmatos, who preferred a heap of tales about the legendary sheriff, the version by Kazdan and Costner is intentionally historical, detailed, and respectful of the real characters. This, among other things, led to their failure at the box office.
- Due to filming on this project, Michael Madsen was unable to join the set of "Pulp Fiction" (1994) to play Vincent Vega.
- The film was originally conceived as a six-hour miniseries.
- A 212-minute version of the film was released on DVD.

- Michael Madsen, who starred in this film, was offered the role of Vincent Vega in Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" (1994), but he had already signed a contract to film with Lawrence Kasdan. According to Madsen, he would have had time to work on both, but the producers hesitated and did not give him time to rehearse the role of Vega. In the end, John Travolta played the character for Tarantino.
