Short description

The Four Musketeers defend the queen and her dressmaker from Cardinal Richelieu and Milady de Winter.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Cardinal Richelieu, played by Charlton Heston (1923-2008), tells d'Artagnan, portrayed by Michael York, that he personally has no enemies, only France does. This line does not appear in the novel or the original screenplay; Heston came across it while preparing for the role and asked director Richard Lester to find a place for it in the script.
  • The actors and actresses involved in the film sued producers Alexander Zalkind (1921-1997) and Ilya Zalkind, claiming that they deliberately presented the matter as if they were to play in a film that was part of Richard Lester’s “The Three Musketeers” (1973). They won the lawsuit, but received less than they would have earned individually for appearing in both films.
