The Four Musketeers

The Four Musketeers continues the story of D'Artagnan and his companions Athos, Porthos and Aramis, who serve King Louis XIII of France. Their loyalty is tested when Cardinal Richelieu's schemes and the vengeful Milady de Winter threaten Queen Anne and those close to the musketeers, including D'Artagnan's beloved Constance Bonacieux. The friends must navigate court intrigue and armed conflict to protect the queen's honour while Milady pursues her own plans for revenge.

Richard Lester directed this 1974 sequel, the fifth of the thirteen films he directed in chronological order, following The Three Musketeers the previous year and preceding Juggernaut. George MacDonald Fraser wrote the screenplay, and the Salkind family produced with Pierre Spengler. The ensemble cast includes Michael York, Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain and Frank Finlay as the four swordsmen, with Faye Dunaway as Milady de Winter and Christopher Lee as Rochefort. Thirty-one credited performers and fifty-four credited crew members worked on the production, which was mounted across the United Kingdom, Spain and the United States.

The film earned about 9 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 13,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.5 out of 10 from a much smaller group of about 232 voters. A critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 28 reviews places professional assessments slightly above the audience score on IMDb, and well above the narrower TMDB sample. The action, adventure, comedy and drama elements run together across a 107-minute runtime.
