Berlin Hero

Michael Hartung is the struggling owner of a heavily indebted video rental store. His life changes when an ambitious journalist claims that Micha, while working for the state railway decades ago, organized a massive escape from East Germany. Tempted by a large sum of money, Micha agrees to the narrative despite the fact that it is only partially true. He unexpectedly becomes a national celebrity, appearing on talk shows and in government settings. To maintain this public admiration and the respect of his family, he continues to sustain the deception.

This comedy was directed by Wolfgang Becker and co-written by Becker and Constantin Lieb. It is the second film directed by Becker, following Good Bye, Lenin! from 2003. The production was a collaboration between companies from Germany and Russia, including X Filme Creative Pool and Sreda. The ensemble cast features Charly Hübner in the lead role, alongside Christiane Paul, Leon Ullrich, Daniel Brühl, Leonie Benesch, and Dirk Martens.
