Set in Detroit, Gridlock'd follows two heroin-addicted musicians, Spoon and Stretch, who play in a band fronted by their friend Cookie. When Cookie falls into a coma after an overdose, the pair vow to get clean together and seek out a government detox program. Their attempt to enroll turns into a day-long ordeal of bureaucracy, as they are passed from one office to another while trying to manage their withdrawal and avoid both the police and drug dealers.
The film was released in 1997 and marks the directorial debut of Vondie Curtis-Hall, who also wrote the screenplay and appears in a supporting role as D-Reper. It came before his later features Glitter and Waist Deep. Tim Roth and Tupac Shakur lead the cast as Stretch and Spoon, with Thandiwe Newton as Cookie and Charles Fleischer and Howard Hesseman in supporting parts. Shakur was killed shortly after filming ended.
Made for around 5 million dollars, the film took in roughly 6 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.6 rating from 252 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 6.7 from 34 reviews, placing the two measures close together.
