Short description
Shocker follows Horace Pinker, a serial killer who terrorizes a city with a string of brutal murders. When he is finally captured and sentenced to death, the electric chair does not end him: he survives the execution as a being of pure energy, able to move through electrical systems and take on the appearance of other people. Jonathan Parker, a college athlete whose dreams gave the police the clues they needed to catch Pinker, becomes the killer's target. The two share a strange connection that runs through those dreams, and Jonathan is the only one who can stand against him.
Wes Craven wrote and directed the film, which sits between The Serpent and the Rainbow and Night Visions as the twelfth of the twenty-five features he directed. Mitch Pileggi plays Pinker, with Peter Berg as Jonathan, Michael Murphy as his father, a police lieutenant, and Camille Cooper, Sam Scarber and Richard Brooks in supporting roles. The production involved Universal Pictures, Carolco Pictures and Alive Films, and the film mixes horror and fantasy with comedy and thriller elements across its 111 minutes.
Made for about 5 million dollars, it returned roughly 17 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.6 from 473 votes, while the critics' score stands at 4.3 from 27 reviews, a gap that places it somewhat higher with audiences than with reviewers.

- The film was shot in 10 weeks.
- In his second dream, Jonathan sees the streets of “Maddalena” and “Wagner.” Marianne Maddalena is the film’s producer, and Bruce Wagner is the actor who played the executioner.
- According to director Wes Craven (1939-2015), the film had to be significantly cut in order to receive an “R” rating (persons under 17 years of age are admitted only when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian). The film was submitted to the American Film Association 13 times until the “X” rating (persons 17 years of age and younger are not admitted) was replaced with an “R” rating. The following scenes were cut from the film, among others: the protagonist, played by Mitch Pileggi, spitting out bitten-off fingers, a longer and more detailed depiction of the execution in the electric chair, and a lengthy scene in which a man stabs himself in the arm.
- Initially, it was planned to shoot a series within the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" franchise, but the box office results were unsatisfactory, and the idea was abandoned.
- During the filming of the scene where Peter Berg's character enters the lake, the actor suffered from hypothermia because the water was freezing.
