The Backwoods

In the late 1970s, two English couples travel to a remote village in the Spanish Basque Country for a summer holiday. Norman and Lucy, whose marriage is going through a difficult period, join their friends Paul and Isabel at the country house Paul has recently bought. The trip is meant to be a quiet break spent hunting and enjoying the outdoors, but the newcomers receive a cold welcome from the suspicious locals. While out in the woods, the group comes across a girl held in a cabin, and their attempt to help her brings them into open conflict with the villagers, who know the terrain far better than they do.

Koldo Serra directed the film, his first feature, from a screenplay he wrote with Jon Sagalá; his second film as director, Guernica, followed a decade later. The cast is led by Gary Oldman as Paul, Virginie Ledoyen as Lucy, Paddy Considine as Norman and Aitana Sánchez-Gijón as Isabel, with Lluís Homar and Jon Ariño among the Spanish performers. The production was a British, Spanish and French co-production shot in Spain, and it runs 97 minutes.

Audience scores place the film in middling territory, with a rating of 5.7 from around 6,100 votes on IMDb and 5.4 from 119 votes on TMDB.
