My Father's Glory

My Father's Glory is a French coming-of-age drama set around the turn of the twentieth century. Young Marcel grows up in a city household under the firm rationalism of his father Joseph, a schoolteacher, and the care of his mother Augustine, a seamstress. When the family spends a summer in the Provençal countryside, Marcel discovers a wider world of hills, open spaces and hunting lore. There he befriends a local boy who introduces him to rural life and its secrets, in what becomes a formative season of his childhood. The film adapts the autobiographical novel by Marcel Pagnol, the first part of a two-film story, and Yves Robert directed it from a screenplay he wrote with Jérôme Tonnerre and Louis Nucéra.

Philippe Caubère and Nathalie Roussel play the parents, with Didier Pain and Thérèse Liotard as Uncle Jules and Aunt Rose; Julien Ciamaca plays Marcel at eleven and Victorien Delamare plays his younger brother Paul. The film arrived in 1990, well into Yves Robert's career, following earlier successes such as War of the Buttons and The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe, and it was followed the same year by its companion film, My Mother's Castle.

A modest performer in worldwide box office terms, the film has found a durable audience over time. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.6 from roughly 7,500 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 7.3 from around 345 votes.
