My Mother's Castle

My Mother's Castle continues the story begun in My Father's Glory, following the young Marcel Pagnol and his family as they return to Marseille, away from the hills of Provence where they spend their holidays. Marcel misses the countryside and his friend there, and the journey back to their cottage becomes an adventure in itself. His father learns of a shortcut that crosses private land, and although the family hesitates, they begin using the secret route. Meanwhile, Marcel becomes absorbed by a girl he meets near the cottage, whose attention leads him to make choices that trouble those close to him.

Yves Robert directed and co-wrote the film with Jérôme Tonnerre, adapting Marcel Pagnol's autobiographical writing. It was the second of two films Robert made from that material, released the same year as My Father's Glory and arriving about three decades after his best-known earlier work, War of the Buttons. Alain Poiré produced, and the cast includes Philippe Caubère and Nathalie Roussel as Marcel's parents, Julien Ciamaca as Marcel, Victorien Delamare as his brother Paul, and Didier Pain and Thérèse Liotard as his aunt and uncle.

The film drew a modest worldwide box office of around 1 million dollars. On IMDb it holds 7.6 out of 10 from roughly 6,100 votes, and on TMDB 7.2 out of 10 from around 300 votes, indicating a warm response from those who have seen it, though from a relatively small audience.
