Short description

A journalist's young daughter vanishes without a trace in the desert. After eight years of grief and family instability, the girl unexpectedly reappears. While the reunion initially seems like a miracle, the situation quickly devolves into a nightmare as the family struggles to understand the nature of her return.

Written and directed by Lee Cronin, this horror and mystery film is the third feature in the director's career, following The Hole in the Ground and Evil Dead Rise. The movie was produced by Jason Blum, James Wan, and John Keville through a collaboration between Blumhouse Productions, New Line Cinema, Atomic Monster, and Wild Atlantic Pictures. The cast is led by Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, and Natalie Grace, supported by May Calamawy, Shylo Molina, and Billie Roy.

The production had a budget of 22 million USD and earned 91 million USD at the worldwide box office, indicating a profitable theatrical run. Audience reception has been positive, as reflected by a rating of 7.9/10 on TMDB based on 2,690 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Flesh-colored latex and paper-like materials were used for the mummy makeup.
  • According to director and screenwriter Lee Cronin, the film's plot was inspired by his personal grief over the death of his mother, who passed away on the same day he finished working on 'Evil Dead Rise.'
  • For the preview, May Calamavi (who played Detective Dalia Zaki) arrived wearing a prosthetic on her neck simulating the wound her character receives in the film.
  • One of the early versions of the finale emphasized the sacrifice made by the main character, played by Jack Reynor. However, it was decided to make the ending more optimistic.
  • On the wave of success of the horror film 'Evil Dead Rise,' producer James Wan approached director Lee Cronin with a proposal to make a new movie about a mummy. Cronin agreed, but decided to tell the story from a different perspective, one more focused on horror.
  • The moment with the teeth is based on a real event that happened to director and screenwriter Lee Cronin while preparing for his mother's funeral.
  • The appearance of the mummy was inspired by the look of bog bodies that Lee Cronin saw at the National Museum of Ireland while preparing for filming.
  • Initially, the film was titled 'The Mummy,' but producer Jason Blum added director Lee Cronin's name to the title to distinguish it from other mummy movies.
  • Filming took place in Almería, Spain.
