Edward Scissorhands: Matthew Bourne's Dance Version brings the story of a boy assembled by an eccentric inventor to the stage. Edward lives alone in a castle on a hill, unfinished, with scissors where his hands should be. A woman from a nearby suburban town takes him into her family home, and he tries to fit into a community that struggles to look past his unusual appearance. The production is a filmed recording of Matthew Bourne's dance adaptation, captured at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff in March 2024, with music by Danny Elfman and Terry Davies.
The film is directed by Matthew Bourne and Ross MacGibbon, with a screenplay credited to Caroline Thompson. It is Bourne's third credited directing work, following La Bayadère in 2011 and 42nd Street in 2019. Liam Mower leads as Edward, alongside Ashley Shaw, Kerry Biggin, Dominic North, Nicole Kabera and Luke Murphy among a credited cast of 25. Bourne produces with Lucie Conrad for New Adventures and Trafalgar Releasing.
At 93 minutes, the release presents the stage production in a cinema format. It arrived in September 2024 as a music and romance title from the United Kingdom, and sits as the most recent of Bourne's three films as director.
