The screenplay was written by Anaïs Mitchell. This project is the fifth film directed by Brett Sullivan, following his previous work on Love Never Dies, Newsies, Waitress: The Musical, and Frozen: The Hit Broadway Musical.

The film was a commercial success, earning 21 million USD worldwide against a budget of 5 million USD. It has been very well received by audiences, maintaining a 9/10 rating on TMDB based on 21 votes.
