Scrooge

Scrooge is a 1951 British adaptation of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol. Ebenezer Scrooge is a wealthy London businessman who hoards his money and treats everyone around him with contempt, refusing warmth even to his clerk Bob Cratchit and his nephew Fred. On Christmas Eve he is visited by the ghost of his late business partner Jacob Marley, who warns him that three spirits will come to him that night. The spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future show Scrooge scenes from his own life and the consequences of his conduct, forcing him to confront the man he has become.

Brian Desmond Hurst directed and produced the film, working from a screenplay by Noel Langley. Alastair Sim leads the cast as Ebenezer Scrooge, with Mervyn Johns as Bob Cratchit, Glyn Dearman as Tiny Tim, George Cole as the younger Scrooge, Brian Worth as Fred and Michael Hordern as Marley. Forty-two performers are credited and the film runs 86 minutes.

The film is regarded as one of the most durable versions of Dickens's story. On IMDb it holds 8.1 out of 10 from around 29,000 votes, while audiences on TMDB give it 7.4 out of 10 from a much smaller sample. A critics' rating of 8.8 out of 10 from 37 reviews places it above both audience scores, reflecting the standing this adaptation has among reviewers.
