The Tales of Hoffmann follows the poet Hoffmann as he waits at a tavern for Stella, the woman he loves. While he waits, he tells a group of students about three past loves and how each was taken from him. He falls for Olympia, who turns out to be a mechanical doll, then for the courtesan Giulietta in Venice, and finally for Antonia, a composer's daughter forbidden to sing. The film is an adaptation of Jacques Offenbach's opera.
The film was written, produced and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger for The Archers, with Dennis Arundell joining them on the screenplay. It sits between The Red Shoes and The Battle of the River Plate in the pair's run of collaborations, and it reunites them with Moira Shearer, who had starred in The Red Shoes. Shearer plays Stella and Olympia, alongside Ludmilla Tchérina as Giulietta and Ann Ayars as Antonia. Robert Helpmann and Léonide Massine each take on several roles, and the credited cast numbers 21.
The film was released in 1951 and runs 127 minutes. It took about 2 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from around 4,500 votes, and on TMDB it also rates 7.1, from 91 votes. A critics' rating of 7.9 from 35 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores on both sites.
