A Christmas Carol

Ebenezer Scrooge is a wealthy but joyless miser in Victorian London who dismisses charity, declines his nephew's Christmas invitation, and grudgingly gives his clerk Bob Cratchit a single day off. On Christmas Eve he is visited by the ghost of Jacob Marley, his late business partner, who warns him of the fate that awaits a selfish life and announces that three spirits will come to him. These visitors show Scrooge scenes from his past, his present, and what lies ahead, forcing him to confront the bitterness and greed that have shaped him and to decide whether he can change. The film adapts Charles Dickens's 1843 novella A Christmas Carol and was made for television.

Clive Donner directed, following The Nude Bomb (1980) in his filmography. Roger O. Hirson wrote the screenplay, and Alfred R. Kelman and William F. Storke produced. George C. Scott plays Scrooge, with Roger Rees as his nephew Fred and narrator, David Warner as Bob Cratchit, Susannah York as Mrs. Cratchit, Edward Woodward as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and Angela Pleasence as the Ghost of Christmas Past. Forty cast members are credited.

Released in October 1984 and running 101 minutes, the production came from Entertainment Partners Ltd. and was a British and American co-production. On IMDb it holds 7.8/10 from around 22,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.5/10 from 438 votes, indicating a well-regarded television adaptation with a substantial audience over the years.
