Short description

Based on a true story, this drama follows the bond between Professor Ueno and an Akita dog named Hachiko. After the professor takes in the puppy, the two develop a close friendship. Hachiko establishes a daily routine of walking his owner to the Shibuya train station every morning and returning each afternoon to meet him. When the professor dies suddenly at work, the dog continues to visit the station every day for years, waiting for his master to return.

Directed by Seijiro Koyama, the film was released in 1987. It follows his previous works, Fifth Movement and Hometown, and precedes his later film, Riot in Gujo. The screenplay was written by Kaneto Shindō. The movie features Tatsuya Nakadai and Kaoru Yachigusa as the professor and his wife, with supporting roles played by Toshiro Yanagiba, Toshinori Omi, Mako Ishino, and Masumi Harukawa.

The film has been well received by audiences, holding a rating of 7.9/10 on IMDb based on 6,300 votes and a 7.8/10 on TMDB from 203 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • A monument to Hachiko was erected, and he personally attended its unveiling. After his death, due to widespread public resonance, a day of mourning was declared in the country. During World War II, the monument was destroyed – the metal was used for military needs. But Japan did not forget the dog, and after the war, in August 1948, the monument was restored. Today, the statue of Hachiko at Shibuya Station is a meeting place for lovers, and the dog's image has become an example of selfless love and loyalty in Japan.
  • Hachiko died of heartworm disease, and several yakitori skewers were found in his stomach.
