Lucas is a fourteen-year-old boy whose interests run toward science and insects rather than football and parties. Small for his age and out of step with his classmates, he finds himself drawn to Maggie, a new girl two years older than him who has just arrived in town. Maggie, however, is more interested in the football team and its players. Determined to get closer to her, Lucas decides to try out for the team, even though he is unsuited to the sport, while his friendship with an older boy named Cappie complicates matters further when Cappie and Maggie begin to grow close.
David Seltzer wrote and directed the film, the first of three features he directed, followed by Punchline in 1988 and Shining Through in 1992. Corey Haim plays Lucas, with Kerri Green as Maggie and Charlie Sheen as Cappie; Winona Ryder, Courtney Thorne-Smith and Tom Hodges appear in supporting roles.
Released in March 1986, the film had a budget of six million dollars and earned roughly eight million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.9 from about nineteen thousand votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from a few hundred votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 from twenty-one reviews places it close to the audience scores.
