Short description
Star Trek is a 2009 science fiction adventure that reimagines the origins of the crew of the USS Enterprise. James T. Kirk grows up in Iowa as a reckless thrill-seeker who joins Starfleet on the advice of a friend of his late father. There he clashes with Spock, a half-Vulcan officer raised to prize logic over feeling. The two become rivals, but when the Romulan captain Nero arrives from the future bent on revenge against the Federation, Kirk and Spock must set aside their hostility and work together aboard the Enterprise under Captain Christopher Pike, in order to stop him.
The film was directed by J.J. Abrams, following Mission: Impossible III, and written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, with Abrams and Damon Lindelof producing. It stars Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Leonard Nimoy as an older Spock, Eric Bana as Nero, Bruce Greenwood as Pike, and Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard McCoy. It is the eleventh feature film in the Star Trek series.
With a budget of 150 million dollars, the film earned 387 million dollars worldwide, a strong result. It holds a critics' rating of 8.3 out of 10 from 351 reviews, higher than its audience scores of 7.9 on IMDb, from 637,000 votes, and 7.4 on TMDB. It sits between Mission: Impossible III and Super 8 in Abrams's filmography.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to Chris Pine, he didn't want to look like a cheap imitation of William Shatner, who played Kirk in the original film, so he came up with his own acting style based on the behavior of two characters played by Harrison Ford, Han Solo and Indiana Jones.
- According to J.J. Abrams, there were only two candidates for the role of the main villain Nero: Eric Bana and Russell Crowe. Eric Bana ultimately played Nero.
- The scenes of the ship's interior (huge rooms with a tangle of pipes and tanks) were filmed at a Budweiser brewery. All these tanks contained Bud Light.
- Kirk could also have been played by Joshua Jackson.
- Josh Lucas was considered for the role of Captain Christopher Pike.
- On the last day of filming as old Spock, Leonard Nimoy broke his nose, and the entire crew immediately stopped filming and offered to postpone it until the next day, but Nimoy refused and insisted on continuing – he had been waiting for this day, and it was very important to him emotionally.
- Sidney Tamiia Poitier auditioned for the role of Uhura.
- Christopher Doohan, the son of James Doohan, who played Scotty in the original film, appears in one of the episodes of the movie.
- The car Kirk rides in as a child is a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette StingRay.
- The role of Kirk could have gone to Mike Vogel.
- The full name of the character Uhura had never been revealed before. However, there were at least three unofficial versions of her name: “Niyota,” “(U)Penda,” and “Samara.” The creators of the new “Star Trek” chose the first option, and in the film, the character played by Zoe Saldana is named Uhura Niyota.
