Battle of the Bulge

Set in December 1944, Battle of the Bulge dramatizes the German counteroffensive through the Ardennes in the final winter of the Second World War. As Allied forces prepare to push into Germany, Hitler orders an attack aimed at retaking French territory and seizing the Belgian port of Antwerp. German Colonel Hessler leads the armored drive, while American intelligence officer Lieutenant Colonel Kiley works to determine where the blow will fall. The German advance depends on captured fuel, and Hessler sets his sights on an Allied supply depot to keep his tanks moving. The story unfolds from both the American and German sides as the fighting develops.

Ken Annakin directed the film, which followed his work on The Longest Day and was released the same year as Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines. The screenplay was written by John Melson, Philip Yordan and Milton Sperling, with Yordan and Sperling producing. Henry Fonda plays Kiley, Robert Shaw plays Hessler, and Robert Ryan, Dana Andrews, Telly Savalas and George Montgomery appear in supporting roles. The production, made by Warner Bros. Pictures, Cinerama Productions and United States Pictures, cost about 7 million US dollars and returned roughly 11 million worldwide.
