The Mastermind

Set in 1970s Massachusetts, this crime drama follows James Blaine Mooney, an unemployed father and amateur art thief. Alongside two accomplices, Mooney orchestrates a daylight heist to steal four paintings from a local museum. While the robbery is successful, the aftermath proves difficult as the group struggles to keep the artwork and evade the police. The story explores Mooney's personal tensions and his flight from the law against a backdrop of social change and the Vietnam War.

The film was directed and written by Kelly Reichardt, following her previous work on Showing Up. It stars Josh O'Connor as Mooney, with Alana Haim, Hope Davis, John Magaro, Gaby Hoffmann, and Jasper Thompson in supporting roles.
