The Rolf family rents a large, aging country house for the summer at a surprisingly low price. The eccentric brother and sister who own it, Arnold and Roz Allardyce, ask only that the tenants look after their elderly mother, who stays in an upstairs room and is never seen. Ben and Marian Rolf move in with their young son Davey and Ben's aunt Elizabeth, and before long strange events begin to unsettle them. The house appears to be restored by injuries and deaths that occur on its grounds.
Dan Curtis directed and co-wrote the screenplay with William F. Nolan, and produced with Alberto Grimaldi. It was his fourth feature as director, following The Night Strangler, Dracula and Trilogy of Terror, and came before Our Fathers. Karen Black and Oliver Reed play the couple, with Burgess Meredith and Eileen Heckart as the Allardyces, Bette Davis as Aunt Elizabeth and Lee Montgomery as Davey.
The film was released in October 1976 and runs 116 minutes. Made for about two million dollars, it took roughly the same amount at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from around 15,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 16 reviews places it below both audience scores.
