- The directorial debut of screenwriter Menno Meyjes.
- Trying to secure funding for his directorial debut, screenwriter Menno Meyjes approached Steven Spielberg with a proposal to produce the film (Meyjes had worked on the screenplays for three films by the legendary director – “The Color Purple,” 1985; “Empire of the Sun,” 1987; and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” 1989). After reviewing the script, Spielberg praised it, calling it “excellent,” but declined to produce a film about the rise of the political figure Hitler and the origins of Nazism.
- John Cusack, who played the lead role, agreed to work for free due to the significant difficulties in finding funding for the film.
- Filming took place in Amsterdam and Budapest.
