Max

Max is a drama set in Munich in 1918, where Max Rothman, a Jewish art dealer and veteran who lost his right arm in the First World War, has given up painting and built a successful gallery instead. At one of his exhibitions he meets Adolf Hitler, a penniless former comrade from his regiment who paints and has strong views about Germany's future. Max takes the younger man under his wing, encouraging him to put his anger into his art, and the two develop a friendship that grows strained as it becomes clear Hitler is drawn to politics rather than painting, and holds antisemitic beliefs that contradict his denials. The film follows this uneasy relationship as both men weigh what to do with their talents.

Menno Meyjes wrote and directed the film, his first as director. John Cusack plays Max Rothman, with Noah Taylor as Adolf Hitler, Leelee Sobieski, Molly Parker, Kevin McKidd and Yuliya Vysotskaya in supporting roles. It was produced by András Hámori for a budget of about 11 million dollars, and made in the United Kingdom, Hungary and Canada. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from around 9,000 votes, on TMDB 6.2 from a small number of votes, while critics gave it 6.5 from 109 reviews, a similar level of response across all three. Meyjes went on to direct Martian Child in 2007.
