What's left behind the scenes

  • Carol Lombard (1908-1942) occasionally inserted profanities into her own lines, so scenes with her participation had to be reshot repeatedly.
  • William Powell (1892-1984) suggested his former wife, Carol Lombard, for the role of the main character, stating that their relationship at the time strongly resembled the relationship between the main characters.
  • Once, William Powell and film director Gregory La Cava (1892-1952) couldn't figure out the film's main character, Godfrey, so they decided they couldn't sort it out without a drink. They 'persuaded' a bottle of whiskey right in Powell's dressing room. The next morning, La Cava, with a terrible headache, arrived on set and found Powell missing. Soon, a telegram from Powell arrived on set: "We found Godfrey, but we lost Powell. See you tomorrow."
