John Rambo has stepped away from combat and lives quietly in a Buddhist monastery, where he has found a measure of peace. His old friend and mentor, Colonel Trautman, asks him to join a secret operation in Afghanistan; Rambo refuses, but when Trautman is taken prisoner, he changes his mind and travels into the country to get him out. There he joins up with Afghan fighters and moves through territory held by Soviet forces, whose commander, Colonel Zaysen, stands between him and his friend.
Rambo III was released in 1988 and directed by Peter MacDonald, the first of the four features he directed, followed later by Mo' Money, The NeverEnding Story III and Legionnaire. Sylvester Stallone returns as John Rambo and co-wrote the screenplay with Sheldon Lettich; Richard Crenna plays Trautman, with Marc de Jonge as Zaysen, Kurtwood Smith as Griggs, and Spiros Focás and Sasson Gabai among the credited cast of 28. Buzz Feitshans produced for TriStar and Carolco.
The production carried a budget of 63 million dollars and took about 189 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb the film holds 5.8 out of 10 from roughly 149,000 votes, and on TMDB it has 6.2 out of 10 from around 3,600 votes. A critics' rating of 4.9 out of 10 from 38 reviews places it below both audience scores.
