Smurfs: The Lost Village
Short description
Smurfette has no clear role in her village, unlike the other Smurfs, so she sets out to find one of her own. After she spots a mysterious creature fleeing into the Forbidden Forest, she follows it, joined by Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty, and the group comes upon a map that points toward a lost village. Papa Smurf has forbidden the forest, and the wizard Gargamel is also hunting for the same place, turning the journey into a race. The friends cross dangerous ground and meet magical creatures along the way before reaching a discovery that changes life for the whole community. The film is entirely animated.
Kelly Asbury directed, working from a screenplay by Pamela Ribon and Stacey Harman. It was the fourth of the five features he directed, arriving between Gnomeo & Juliet and UglyDolls, and it followed his earlier work on Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and Shrek 2. Demi Lovato voices Smurfette, with Rainn Wilson as Gargamel, Mandy Patinkin as Papa Smurf, Joe Manganiello as Hefty, Jack McBrayer as Clumsy and Danny Pudi as Brainy among a credited cast of 48. Made for 60 million USD, it took 197 million USD worldwide, a strong return on its budget.
On IMDb the film sits at 6 out of 10 from 23,541 votes, and on TMDB at 6.4 out of 10 from 1,593 votes. A critics' rating of 4.8 out of 10 from 97 reviews places it below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- This is a reboot of the entire "Smurfs" franchise, not a live-action film with a different cast. This decision was made due to the box office failure of "The Smurfs 2" (Raj Gosnell, 2013) and the death of Jonathan Winters (1925-2013), who voiced Papa Smurf in it.
- Baker Smurf is voiced by Gordon Ramsay, a famous British chef and host of British television shows and their American counterparts.
