SpaceCamp

SpaceCamp is an adventure film set at a NASA training facility where teenagers spend their summer learning what it takes to become astronauts. The instructor, Andie, is an astronaut herself, still waiting for her own first mission, and she runs the camp alongside her husband, who works for the agency. During a practice session aboard a shuttle, an engine test goes wrong and the shuttle launches with Andie and a handful of campers on board. Stranded in orbit, the group has to figure out how to operate the spacecraft and get back to Earth. Among the young people are Kathryn, who is training to be a pilot, and Tish, who has an exceptional memory but a scattered manner.

Harry Winer directed the film, the second of the five features listed for him, following Mirrors a year earlier and preceding House Arrest a decade later. Clifford Green and Casey T. Mitchell wrote the screenplay, and Walter Coblenz and Patrick Bailey produced. Kate Capshaw plays Andie, with Lea Thompson, Kelly Preston, Larry B. Scott, Tate Donovan and Joaquin Phoenix among the campers.

Released in June 1986, the film was made for about 18 million dollars and took in roughly 10 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 5.8 rating from around 17,000 votes, and on TMDB a 5.9 from about 216 votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 from 15 reviews places it close to the audience scores, with neither group rating it highly.
