Heartburn

Rachel is a food writer in New York whose cookbook career has come before marriage and children, while Mark is a Washington newspaper columnist with a weakness for women. They meet at a wedding, marry and settle into a house together, and Rachel leaves her working life behind to raise their child. When she is pregnant with their second, she learns that Mark has been unfaithful, and she takes their daughter to her father while she decides what comes next.

The film is a comedy drama directed by Mike Nichols, working from a screenplay by Nora Ephron. It was Nichols's seventh feature in a directing career of eighteen films, arriving between Silkwood and Working Girl. Meryl Streep plays Rachel and Jack Nicholson plays Mark, with Jeff Daniels, Maureen Stapleton, Stockard Channing and Richard Masur among a credited cast of fifty-seven. Robert Greenhut and Joel Tuber produced alongside Nichols for Paramount.

Released in July 1986, the film ran 108 minutes and was made for about 15 million dollars, returning roughly 53 million worldwide, a solid multiple of its cost.
