During filming in one of the towns in New York state, the filmmakers accidentally damaged two power line poles with transformers. A fire broke out that could not be extinguished with water until the electricity was shut off. Consequently, 11 residents of nearby houses had to be evacuated and relocated to hotels.
The film is dedicated to the memory of director Stuart Rosenberg (1927-2007), under whom the film's director, Rob Schmidt, once studied.
Almost the entire film was shot on location. Only one set with decorations was constructed for the filming.
During the first meeting between the characters played by Eliza Dushku and Timothy Hutton at his home, bottles can be seen on a high sideboard in the background. This suggests that the character is able to stand up and is by no means confined to a wheelchair.
