Short description
The Alphabet Killer is a crime thriller about Megan Paige, a police officer in Rochester, New York, who becomes fixated on the rape and murder of a young girl. Convinced that the victim's initials point toward the killer's identity, she pursues the case relentlessly, but the pressure and her own mental health problems force her off the force. Two years later, after time in psychiatric care, she is drawn back into the investigation when another girl is killed in similar circumstances, and she must confront both the murderer and her own instability.
The film is directed by Rob Schmidt, whose previous feature was Wrong Turn in 2003. Tom Malloy wrote the screenplay and also appears in the cast, while Aimee Schoof, Isen Robbins and Malloy produced. Eliza Dushku plays Megan Paige, with Cary Elwes as Capt. Kenneth Shine, Timothy Hutton as Richard Ledge, Michael Ironside as Captain Nathan Norcross, and Hope Tomaselli as Parishioner.
Made for about 2 million dollars, the film was released in November 2008 and runs 98 minutes. Its ratings are modest: on IMDb it holds 5.2 out of 10 from roughly 9,400 votes, and on TMDB 5.1 out of 10 from around 209 votes. A critics' rating of 4.6 out of 10 from eight reviews places it close to the audience scores, indicating broadly similar, limited enthusiasm from both groups.
What's left behind the scenes
- During filming in one of the towns in New York state, the filmmakers accidentally damaged two power line poles with transformers. A fire broke out that could not be extinguished with water until the electricity was shut off. Consequently, 11 residents of nearby houses had to be evacuated and relocated to hotels.
- The film is dedicated to the memory of director Stuart Rosenberg (1927-2007), under whom the film's director, Rob Schmidt, once studied.
- Almost the entire film was shot on location. Only one set with decorations was constructed for the filming.
- During the first meeting between the characters played by Eliza Dushku and Timothy Hutton at his home, bottles can be seen on a high sideboard in the background. This suggests that the character is able to stand up and is by no means confined to a wheelchair.
